Vi Technology has introduced two automated optical inspection systems, the Vi-2000 and the Vi-3000. The Vi-2000 can inspect 100,000 components per hour at speeds of more than 2m/s. The unit installs at various and multiple locations in an SMT line, typically after the stencil printer for measuring solder paste deposits, after the chip shooter to check for component placement, or after reflow to inspect solder joint integrity. The system can contain up to four CCD cameras and various lighting options, including axial center, axial peripheral and near annular amber, as well as near annular green. All lighting modes are adjust-able from 0 to 100%. TheVi-3000 can inspect up to 150,000 components per hour, and employs a camera with a resolution of 1,300 x 1,000 pixels and a large field of view (48 x 37mm). With its proprietary vision card, the Vi-3000 can convert images digitally to better eliminate errors due to noise. Programming is carried out under Windows NT 4.0 in less than 15 minutes. Gerber, CAD or ASCII/Centroid data can be used. Vi-3000 comprises SPC software tools and a synthetic component library. The linear motors of the Vi-3000 are maintenance-free. Optical encoders (glass scale) ensure a precise positioning with a repeatability of ±1µm (resolution ±5µm). ws
