Lambda (distributed in Europe by Macrotron Systems) has added the MicroCure CF5100 to the variable-frequency microwave (VFM) systems. The CF5100 is capable of processing a continuous flow of parts, without the need for closing doors or separating parts into batches. The oven features a unique system of microwave chokes which completely contains the waves within the curing area, allowing it to remain open to a conveyor. This permits faster processing while eliminating uneven heating and costly preparation of large reels associated with batch curing in conventional ovens. Lambda’s patented microwave technology allows significantly faster curing of polymeric adhesives and coatings used to encapsulate components or attach them to boards, while eliminating the hot spots and arcing associated with conventional technology. VFM speeds up cure rates by a factor of ten, greatly reducing work in process, inventory and labor costs. The system occupies about 30% less floor space than forced-convection systems, and consumes virtually no energy while idling. VFM allows selective focusing of energy on the underfiller between a flip-chip and substrate. This leaves the flip-chip and substrate much cooler than the underfiller, minimizing stress due to thermal mismatch and resulting in improved reliability and yields.
